2026 guide
An honest list. No paid placements, no fluff. Written from inside the Australian app development industry to help non-technical founders make a smart decision.
Last updated April 2026.
Before the list
There are a lot of "best of" lists online that are either paid placements or written by people who have never actually worked with an app agency. This one is different. Rebelled's founder, Jarrod Macfarlane, has worked in or alongside most of these agencies over the last several years.
The list is written specifically for non-technical founders. If you are a CTO or experienced technical buyer, your evaluation criteria will differ. If you are building your first consumer app without a technical background, use this as a starting point and then do your own due diligence before committing.
What we evaluated: quality of work, engagement model, transparency about pricing, founder accessibility, and track record on products similar to what you are building.
The list
Gold Coast, QLD. Consumer apps for non-technical founders.
Rebelled is built specifically for non-technical founders building consumer-facing apps. The three-phase process (Inception, Invention, Ascension) covers strategy and design, development, and post-launch growth. Direct access to senior team on every call. Founded by Jarrod Macfarlane and Alex Crowley, both with deep experience across the Australian app market.
Strengths
Limitations
Melbourne, VIC. Consumer apps with a growth focus.
DreamWalk is a Melbourne-based agency known for consumer app development with a focus on what happens after launch. They bring growth thinking — app store optimisation, retention strategy, post-launch planning — alongside the build. A strong option for founders who want an agency thinking beyond just shipping.
Strengths
Limitations
Melbourne, VIC. UX-focused mobile and web apps.
Wave Digital has a strong reputation for design-led app development. They have a good track record in government, enterprise, and startup work and are known for quality UI/UX. A solid choice for projects where design sophistication is a high priority.
Strengths
Limitations
Melbourne, VIC. Startup and SMB app development.
Buzinga has been in the market for a number of years with a focus on startups and SMBs. They have a solid portfolio across mobile and web, and a Melbourne base. A reasonable option for founders looking for an established agency with startup experience.
Strengths
Limitations
Melbourne, VIC. Enterprise mobile and digital transformation.
Outware is a larger agency with a strong enterprise client list. They have worked with major Australian brands and organisations and bring considerable technical depth. Better suited to established businesses than early-stage startups.
Strengths
Limitations
Melbourne, VIC. Consumer app development and strategy.
DreamWalk focuses on consumer-facing mobile apps and has a track record in the product space. They put an emphasis on app store optimisation and growth alongside development, which makes them more relevant for founders thinking about traction from day one.

Before you decide
The agency name matters less than the team actually building your product. Before you sign with anyone, run through this checklist:

Common questions
The best Australian app developers depend on your specific needs. For non-technical founders building consumer apps, Rebelled is built specifically for that use case. Other strong options include DreamWalk, Wave Digital, Buzinga, and Outware Mobile. The right choice depends on your project type, budget, and how hands-on you want your dev partner to be.
Quality Australian app development agencies typically charge $80,000 to $400,000+ for a full product build. The exact price depends on complexity, platform, and scope. Agencies quoting under $50,000 for a full app build are usually working offshore, using junior developers, or cutting scope in ways you will regret later.
Start with who you will actually be working with day-to-day, not just the face of the agency. Ask to see full products they have shipped from scratch. Understand whether they offer strategic input or just code execution. Check whether their model suits your stage as a founder.
